Financial Literacy Workshop For Kids

Free online workshops have just been launched to help kids with their financial literacy. Money management is a key skill in life that hasn’t always been taught in school curriculum. This virtual online series released by CPA Canada and Canada Life will be able to teach kids fundamentals of finance. It will cover topics such as money management, responsibility, bank accounts and income.

“The pandemic’s impact confirms the urgency of teaching financial literacy and implementing a range of remote learning opportunities,” said Doretta Thompson, CPA Canada’s financial literacy leader.

WazzCards is a financial literacy program developed by Wazzio Inc. that commenced in August this year, targeting 5th to 8th grade students. These free, virtual workshops are a fantastic way to start teaching children the importance of financial skills. Alongside parents and teachers, there’s the opportunity for co-learning. These skills will always be useful throughout their lives.

As long as you have internet access, you can access the learning resources. The material includes PowerPoints, worksheets and engaging animated videos to teach students. According to Wazzio CEO, Cher Grant, the pilot program is aimed at those in at-risk groups. It will seek to bolster kids’ education and spark their interest at a time when there have been disruptions to learning due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The 2-week program will see students partake of eight classes capped at 30 students each. The teacher certified curriculum incorporates multiple-choice deck content that covers such core subjects as Language, Math, Science, and History. It will enable students to gain a stronger understanding of money and finance, all while being monitored by teachers and parents in real-time. Grant expects the program to help children adopt strong financial habits that will last a lifetime.

CPA Canada and Canada Life are now also offering another virtual program that will provide free financial literacy workshops for kids. Launched just as schools reopened, the virtual series is downloadable and covers several subject areas targeted to specific age groups, including; savings and bank accounts, earning income, goal setting, responsibilities of pet ownership, credit cards and debt.

It is extremely important to offer financial literacy programs at these times, but also to integrate learnings into everyday educational subjects. Financial literacy helps students plan for their future and understand how to do the most with income and manage expenses and loans. At a macro level, higher levels of financial literacy will result in a stronger overall economy.
